Characters from the original release can be imported to the enhanced edition to continue play, but must be from the same console family (eg: PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4). Character customization has been expanded, with the addition of changeable character Heads. Each characters class defines the style of weaponry they specialise in, along with the unique skill they can use - Brick can enter a rage state for increased. Some additional objects - such as rocks, trees and lootable containers - have been added to the game worlds. On PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, split-screen cooperative play on the same console is now possible for up to four players. Some unique weapon parts have been set to fix, thus prevent them to have elemental versions. The rarity of some weapons (such as the Penetrator and Draco) have been corrected. Six all-new Gearbox manufactured Legendary weapons - Hive Mind, Violence, Silent Night, Mug Shot, Baha's Bigger Blaster and Sucker Punch. In addition to the compass featured in the original release, a minimap is now available to help navigate maps, and objective waypoints are always displayed at their location, giving exact distances between them and the player.The game is also now capable of being played in 4K and at higher framerates on consoles. Textures have been given a higher resolution, providing crisper visuals. Others are also reporting an issue with receiving the free 75 gold chest keys offered to players who connect their Gearbox Shift account that has played another Borderlands game. Considering the game is widely lauded as being a great four-player co-op game, this is a pretty major issue. Some have reported being able to fix the issue on their own by using port-forwarding on their router, however.

Since its release earlier this week, players have been experiencing matchmaking issues with Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition.
